In gamification a player benefits from knowing their journey, from a psychological view it means you have a sense of control. You can speed up or slow down in order to complete the journey. In most cases players are looking for a journey towards mastery, where they can show that they have increased knowledge, experiences or another intrinsic reason of taking a part in a process.
I have found in training and e-learning that having a roadmap for the journey helps the learner, but also the facilitator. If you think about your journey through education, there was always another level to reach and along the way people encouraged you to reach that next level, yet most of the motivation had to come from within you to complete the tasks and actions required to earn that level.
